Kandahar
Fall 2010
Location: Kandahar, Afghanistan
Design:
This city plan was intentionally designed to limit sight lines. In Afghani culture, privacy is very important. Creating courtyards which were offset along pathways and a meandering path allowed for more private spaces. The individual housing project was intended to follow a similar idea of a meandering pathway in plan and also in sectional relationships. The stairways leading to the upper floors do not fall on top of one another. The building uses heavy masonry walls for thermal mass and employs a cooling stack to counteract the intense heat.
